Where do we feel?
I recently stumbled across some interesting research in the field of emotions. The author, apparently a graphic designer from the UK, asked several people to relate emotions like anger, fear, joy, sadness and love to the part(s) of the body where they feel these emotions. They indicated their responses on an outline drawing of the human body. The images were then overlaid to sum up everyone’s responses. The resulting comps are fascinating.
They were asked another interesting question, regarding the directionality of these emotions. Here I’ve placed the results of the “where” and the “what direction” next to each other.
This intrigues me as an animator. The results are very close to what we’ve learned about body language and power centers. I plan to dig up animation poses that corroborate this when I get some time, after returning from my trip. In the meantime, feel free to post your thoughts on what an animator can learn from this (if at all).
