Steppin’ up
Here it is! The cartoon test I’ve been finishing up. I did most of the animation during my last APT session with Keith, and then tweaked it afterwards. I also wanted to try a loose, rough style of rendering and backgrounds, to go with the animation style.

Nothing ground-breaking here in terms of animation, but doing this stuff in CG takes work. You’re constantly finding ways to work around the inherent stiffness in the software tools.
Painting the backgrounds was a lot of fun. They’re heavily influenced by the golden age cartoons, of course. And if you’ve seen the recent trio of cartoon paintings I posted(here, here and here), you’ll spot all three of them in the background of this piece. Yes, that was the plan from the beginning. Although making those paintings was great fun in itself.
Enjoy!

Oh man! I remember seeing this short posted on Keith's blog. I loved it! The style fits well and is consistent throughout, and I really like the movement.
You managed to get a fresh, unique look that fits the animation and feels warm and comfortable, not forced.
I'd like to see more such experiments. Too many "independent" animated shorts these days are starting to look the same today. I really respect French animation, and a few years ago it had freshness and a design sense that was different from American animation. But nowadays, it seems to be drifting really close to the Hollywood style. I'm glad that you and your friend made such interesting choices in your short film.
Thanks for bookmarking my blog! I look forward to more experiments from you as well.

Thanks, Miurika! I’m glad you liked it.
I made my own shader in Maya. I’ll write a blog post about it soon, so keep an eye out for it. As for the animation, it owes a lot to Keith’s guidance! I couldn’t have done it without his insights and critiques.
