About Me

sunny kharbandaI’ve always been searching.

After getting a bachelor’s in computer engineering, I gave up a lucrative job at a major software company, instead setting my sights on my new-found love: animation. This was in 1999, when everyone thought software engineering was THE place to be. I was looking for my artistic side.

In 2004, with a master’s in computer animation and film festival honors under my belt, I didn’t make a beeline for Hollywood like many of my classmates did. In collaboration with my friend Suchi, I opted for smaller freelance projects with more creative control than I would have had at a large studio. Which meant more searching — the constant search for gigs, and the search for my niche in a competitive business.

I now teach animation at the Art Institute of Washington, where I met my wife Ya-Nan. I still freelance when possible. But mostly, I spend my free time searching for the artist in myself. And that’s what this blog is about.

Why Flux?

Because that’s life! Always in flux; always changing. And why not? Change is what makes it interesting. Or, more correctly, the balance of stillness and change is what makes life interesting.

Just like animation. An action says something to the audience, then a hold lets them absorb it while building anticipation for the next action; and so on.

Actions and holds. Stillness and change.

This blog is about one small stream of flux — my attempts to learn art and animation. I hope these records of my search will help others on the same path.

Taking life one frame at a time.
